Pause for Thought February 2019

“A hope and a future” -  (Jeremiah 29:11)

February is a month when we need to see the bigger picture. It’s a month when we begin to get a bit fed up with winter and all the cold weather, the long nights. Bill Bryson described it as ‘like living in Tupperware’. We feel we’ve had enough, but it can snow in April so we’ve got a fair way to go yet.

Some people go away for a bit of winter sun. I’ve never done that, so I don’t know what it’s like when you return to a darker, colder Barnack/Bainton. I have a 93 year old friend who goes to Tenerife from October to March every year to get away from the long cold season. Another friend, brought up in Kenya, found he couldn’t cope with the lack of light during UK winters after he moved here, so he and his family moved to Guernsey to live.

We all need the bigger picture, the long view, some hope. I can cope much better in stationary traffic on the motorway, moving a car length every few minutes, if I am told what the problem is and how far ahead it is, what the bigger picture is.

Snowdrops and crocuses forcing their way through the ground give us that hope of spring and summer on their way.

Sometimes we are suddenly faced with the bigger picture. Maybe it’s the admission of the failed new year resolutions, or some shock news - personal or national -about our health, or a positive shock -like finding out it’s triplets, or a big promotion – these things can force a new perspective on us, a bigger picture. Personally, I am getting ready to be a grandparent for the first time. What a time of hope and joy and potential.

We are told in the Bible that Jesus went up to Jerusalem to face death knowing the bigger picture. Hebrews 12 tells us that “For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

I don’t know what you are dealing with or what will come your way this year, but my prayer is that you will always be given signs of hope and have your eyes raised to see the bigger picture.

Every blessing for 2019.
