News and Events for July 2013

Starting with...

The QueenThe Buttercross Club
The Coronation Tea Party in Bainton Reading Room was a great success. The weather was glorious, thus enabling us to have tables outside as well as in the hall. We were also very pleased that Sunday, June 2nd , was actually the 60th anniversary to the very day of the coronation of Elizabeth II.
Many thanks to the ladies of the Buttercross who made sure that we had enough cakes and scones to feed Bainton, Ashton and the surrounding villages. In addition we had a range of delicious sandwiches and, courtesy of our chairman, Anne Harrison-Smith, we were able for the most part to serve the teas on rather splendid cake stands – as good as any used by a famous London store!
The competition for best crown was won by Charlie Jessett, aged 8, for the boys and Sophie Jessett, aged 6, for the girls. They each received a commemorative mug.
Our next Buttercross meeting, the Chairman’s Supper, is at Willow Cottage on Wednesday, July 3rd. We are hoping to have the annual Boules Evening on Wednesday, August 7th.

The Committee is considering fund raising via a bric-a-brac stall in Stamford’s Friday market - possibly in late July or early August. Confirmation of the date to follow. Could be a chance to clear out the attic and/or garage (within reason!)

The Committee is in the early stages of planning a Branch outing - suggestions being considered include RAF Cranwell, East Kirkby Air Show, the Old Warden Military Pageant, Bletchley Park and the Defence Animal Centre in Melton Mowbray. Comments and suggestions welcome.
Cliff Shepherd (ex-WW II RAF Regiment WO) will be 100 years old on Tuesday 2 July. If anyone would like to wish Cliff a happy birthday, please call in to Hilary Close in Stamford between 1730 and 1930.

Medal mounting -
If you missed the article in the Stamford Mercury, F/S Tim Pidoux at RAF Wittering will court mount medals or put them in display cases for rather less than the commercial rate. All monies raised go to the RAFA. Further details from me.

The Community Church - Sunny Hunny
As I write we are getting ready to go on our annual coach outing tomorrow to Old Hunstanton for a day of traditional seaside fun on the beach.  It is almost sunny at the moment, so we are hopeful for a dry day to have a great time together.  This year over 65 people are coming on the outing so we have had to lay on additional transport!  Sunny Hunny here we come!

Messy Church with the Community Church
For July Messy Church will be a bit different, we will be in the Methodist Chapel on Main Street, Barnack in the morning of July 28th!  We will start at 9.30am with a continental style breakfast! Then things will be similar to usual. There’ll be lots of themed crafts and fun activities and a Bible story time and songs, all exploring the theme of God’s love.  We will finish with plenty of time left for the rest of the first Sunday of the school holidays.
Come along and find out why so many people, in our local community, across the country and around the world, love Messy Church, we will be delighted to see you.  To find out more please contact Karen Dunn 749198 or Val Haines-Eynon 740017.
Throughout August we will be in the Methodist Chapel at 9.30am on Sundays for breakfast and a short service for all ages together.  Everyone really welcome to join in.

Little Lambs
Little Lambs Toddler Group is for mums, dads and carers with babies and toddlers from birth to 4 years and takes place every Tuesday in school term time, at Barnack Village Hall.  For July that’s the 2nd, 9th, 16th, from 10am to 12noon.   And then on the 23rd July just before the summer holidays we will be going on our summer trip and picnic.
We will give out more details of this outing at Little Lambs during July.  Little Lambs is a very popular and friendly place to meet new people, catch up with friends and watch the children explore the joy of playing together.  For the first hour the hall is laid out with games, toys, slides, craft activities and rugs to sit on.   Midway through the morning, we clear away the toys and sit down around a long table for tea, coffee and delicious cakes while the children have a tasty snack of fruit and small cake or biscuit.  Then it’s time for a short bible story and action songs which all the children seem to really enjoy.
This leaves ten minutes or so at the end for the toddlers to let off a bit of steam as they whizz round on cars and trikes before going home for a well-earned rest, and hopefully an afternoon nap.  Little Lambs is run by the Community Church– for further details please contact Karen Dunn 749198. We look forward to meeting you.  The next Little Lambs after the summer holidays will be on the 10th September.

Youth Club

Junior Youth Club
There ‘ll be a Youth Club taster session on Friday 12th July in Barnack Village Hall 7.00 – 8.30pm, for children in school years 5 and 6.  Come along and find out what happens at Youth Club.

Men’s Breakfasts
There were 17 men at the Community Church Men’s breakfast in June.  George Farmer gave an insightful and captivating talk on his experiences in Afghanistan.  The next Men’s breakfast will be on July 5th.  Cliff Stanton will be explaining where it all goes when we flush the toilet!  No doubt others can think of a good title  ’Cliff talking a load of ……..!’
All are welcome, a ‘Full English’ is served at 8-30 am and this is followed by the short talk.  If you wish to come along just turn up or let us know by ringing Rob Porter 01780 740663, so that we can cater for the right number.

Sponsored Swim for Friends of Chernobyl Children
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated money to our sponsored swim. The response to our leaflet drop was amazing and far exceeded our expectations. Between our two families we managed to swim just six lengths short of 10 miles and raised over £800!
Many of you have also donated much needed clothing for the children who will be coming over to stay with host families for a month in July. Clothing is a luxury the families cannot afford, these donations really do mean so much to them as they struggle to put food on the table.
This is the first year for both our families hosting a child, we will continue to host the same children for four years.  Having just handed over a specially chosen cuddly which will be given to our host children as they arrive at the airport, excitement and apprehension is building. A reminder that only 17 more sleeps before they arrive certainly focuses the mind!
Our involvement with this charity will be ongoing, if you are ever clearing out any warm children’s clothing, coats, wellies, trainers, winter boots we will be very pleased to hear from you, now or in the future. Please contact either
Kerrie M 07786417036 or Helen M 07771934863.
Thank you once again - The Johnson and Garner families.
