Reading Buddies Wanted

reading buddyDear Barnack Community Member,

I am sure you would agree that reading is such an important part of our children’s education and we would all want to promote a love of books and reading so that children are able to access many areas of life.

As a school we are always looking for ways to:

  • Help all children become better readers
  • Increase children’s interest and enjoyment in books.

We have been very lucky at Barnack to have a valued and loyal group of Reading Buddies who have given up an afternoon a week to read with some of the children in school over the past few years. However, with some of our Buddies going on to do other things after years of volunteering we find ourselves with lots of opportunities for a new group to start. Therefore, I am writing to give you an overview of Reading Buddies and to ask you to consider if you would be willing to give up some time to be a Barnack Reading Buddy!

We are aiming to recruit five to ten Reading Buddies and those who are interested will need to attend a workshop (in school with Mrs Maxwell) of approximately 2 hours. You would also need to commit yourself to one hour a week to help a small group of children on a 1:1 basis with their reading.

Once you have attended the training and had your DBS checks you will be able to start coming in school on a weekly basis. I would like to try and get our Reading Buddies started for after October half-term. Traditionally Tuesday has been our Reading Buddy afternoon, however we plan to make this more flexible to fit in with our Reading Buddies busy schedules and class teachers. If you are a parent of a child in school the perfect time to come in would be half past 2 so that you can finish at the end of the school day.

If you, or anyone you know, are interested in becoming a Reading Buddy, please contact the school office ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) with your name and some contact details so that we can contact you when we have a date for the workshop and to give us an idea of potential numbers.

Thank you for your time and I hope to be able to welcome you into the Reading Buddy initiative in the new academic year.

Many Thanks, Mrs Maxwell
