SALLY HULLOCK’S TWO CUPS AT PRESENTATION NIGHT

Tuesday 8th October saw the popular Barnack Cricket Club end of season Awards and Presentation evening at a packed Maharani’s Restaurant in Deeping St. James. The Committee, players, sponsors, supporters and their families enjoyed a fabulous 2 course meal. Many thanks to Maharani’s and our sponsors Fordson Developments, Sovereign Accountants, PVS Audio Visual and A2B Euro Cars.
The regular awards for batting and bowling were awarded to the players. And a very special mention goes to Asim Butt, who was presented with a new bat to celebrate reaching 10,000 runs for the club.
Butt joined Barnack in 2008 as they struggled for survival in Rutland League 2 and has been ever-present in their Rutland side ever since. He passed the milestone when hitting his 33rd century for the club against Werrington. In total, he has accumulated 10,138 runs at an average of just over 57, while playing over 200 times for the club on Sundays in the Rutland League. Butt has also represented both Peterborough and Brigstock in the Northants Premier League, as well as Cambridgeshire in Minor Counties. Club captain Muhammad Yaseen presented the award to Butt, stating, “Asim has been the outstanding batsman for Barnack over the last 17 years and probably the most consistent in the Rutland League. He has been an inspiration to the side not only through his batting but also his energy in the field, where he has taken over 100 catches. As a club, we have been fortunate to have a player of Butt’s ability in our side for this duration of time.”
Other awards presented were:
The Mike Harley Trophy for contribution to Youth Cricket was shared between Johnny Hullock & Kitty Newns.
The John Henry Sindall Trophy Youth Player of the Year was awarded to Zeesh Yaseen.
The Midweek League Batsman and Bowler went to Ed Wass and Alex Spragg respectively.
The Jocky Harris Award is voted for by the Committee to a person that has gone beyond the call of duty and excelled either on and/or off the pitch. And The Chairman’s Unsung Hero of Year Award is awarded to a person who has worked hard behind the scenes.
This year both awards overwhelmingly goes to a person who has been and is tireless in absolutely everything they do. Never ending in all activities; whether it’s Friday nights with the kids and running the bar, managing so many activities in the Village, single-handedly building the new Cricket Club and Village storage facility. Both Awards were presented to a very happy Sally Hullock, pictured.
A great night was had by all.

HO HOHO! COFFEE STOP CHRISTMAS SING ALONG

When I write this at the beginning of October I’m thinking “Where has this year gone, surely we can’t be at that point again when we are thinking about Christmas?!”
However, the planning has already started for our third Coffee Stop Christmas Sing Along which will be held on Wednesday 18th December (10.30-12 noon) in Barnack Church. Hot drinks and mince pies will be ‘on the house’.
You will receive a warm welcome at this great event which is open to all those in our community and neighbouring villages. It’s a great opportunity to get you in the mood for the Christmas season. There will be a mix of the usual seasonal singing and other secular favourites that we associate with this time of year.
We are pleased that our resident musicians are again available to play for us. However, we would want to encourage any other folk to come and join us who play musical instruments or who are up for singing a solo or are happy to even do a spot of karaoke! (If you would like to be involved in this event please would you contact me by 1st December).
To be assured of a table we would encourage people to come a little earlier than 10.30 am if possible. Disabled access and assistance is available and some tables will be reserved near the entrance for those who have mobility issues.
As last year we have decided to donate any contributions to The Disasters Emergency Committee which is an umbrella group of UK charities which coordinates and launches collective appeals to raise funds to provide emergency aid and rapid relief to people caught up in disasters and humanitarian crises around the world.
The DEC have launched an emergency appeal to double donations to provide urgent support to those in need across Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region. For the next 25 days (from 19th October) it is possible to make a donation to the DEC WHICH WILL BE MATCH FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT. If you are interested in donating just put DEC into Google.
(Coffee Stop meets every Wednesday at the Millstone Pub in Barnack, 10.30-12 noon. It would be lovely to see you there, please feel free to join us). Carol Pickering 01780 740438

The Arts Society Peterborough’s monthly talk @ The Fleet, PE2 4DL

14th NOVEMBER 2024
‘The Twelve Plants of Christmas’ with Timothy Walker formerly Director of Oxford Botanic Gardens
Before we know it Christmas will be upon us, so with this in mind we offer this most interesting talk. Apart from the pear tree in which a partridge sat, there are no plants in the 12 days of Christmas according to the folk song. Sadly, even that reference is erroneous, because partridges are ground dwelling birds. And yet at Christmas we are surrounded by plants. This talk puts the records straight and rewrites the zoocentric song replacing partridges with poinsettias and maids with mistletoe.
Doors open at 10-15am for coffee and a chat, the talk starts at 10-45am and lasts an hour, all are welcome, so why not come and join us?

Thank you Carol, Sue and Emma – you know who you are – for coming along to listen to our annual update
For those who couldn’t make it – biggest news is that we have three new members to take us in to 2025. It’s an exciting time ahead -new team, new ideas but continued commitment to look after the Hall and bring you a variety of Community socials over the coming months. Mary-Clare Miller from School Road has joined us and Paul and Alix Doubleday from Sissons Close join as a duo! Paul has also taken over the very important role of Treasurer from Andy Cavaciuti who stepped down, at the AGM, after 6 years. Andy has done a brilliant job keeping those T’s crossed and Is dotted, and we’re going to miss his process maps and event sheet drill! Naomi James has also stepped down after 6 years, another key member of the team. Naomi was our team voice of reason; the calming influence at the peak of event planning; always ready at the right moment with the reassuring words “it’ll all be fine guys”. Thanks to Andy and Naomie for all their help and support over the past 6 years.
Here’s the new team – photos in next months edition!

Barnack Fun Run 2024 Thanks

Barnack School association was proud to host Barnack’s annual Fun Run again this year on Saturday 5th October.
275 runners of all ages ran, jogged and walked around the village course to raise vital funds for the school.
Another 65 young runners from Barnack, John Clare, Copthill, Malcolm Sargent, and Edenham Primary Schools also took part in the schools challenge races.
The Fun Run was a fantastic community event again this year. We’d like to thank all the volunteers who helped to set up, marshal the course, parked cars and served refreshments on the day.
A special thank you to our main sponsor Frank Modern Estate Agents. And of course thank you to all those who took part in the run. We had more participants than ever this year and after a really rainy week we had a lovely sunny day too which was the icing on the cake.
The fun run is always the highlight of our school fundraising calendar. So thank you to everyone who ran, volunteered or supported us on the day for helping to make it such a success.
The event raised just under £3,000. Thank-you!
Next year’s Fun Run will be on Saturday 4th October 2025 – Save the date!

Messy Church at Barnack

Messy Church on November 10th will be in Barnack Village Hall instead of Barnack Church.
This is because of the work that is going on at the moment to repair the leaky roof of the side chapel, where we usually gather together for ours songs and Bible story.
Apart from the change of venue everything else will be just the same. Running from 3.30pm -5pm, starting with coffee, tea, squash and biscuits, then a song and Bible story, followed by lots of crafts and activities and some toys for the little ones, all ending with songs and a prayer.
We’ll be thinking about Jesus and grace and how God values and is gracious to everyone. Please do come along and join in, we all have lots of fun. In December Messy Church will be on Sunday the 8th, hope that you’ll be able to come then too.

85 Years Solving Problems in Peterborough

Recently, volunteers from Citizens Advice Peterborough celebrated the organisation’s 85th birthday with tea and cake in the city centre. Set up in early September 1939,just after the start of the Second World War, the service’s dedicated volunteers have been offering local people vital advice ever since.
After Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced on the radio, “we are now at war with Germany,”temporary offices were set up across the country in cafes, church halls, private homes and air-raid shelters. A converted horse box was even used in some bombed areas of London to ensure people still had access to important information in their hour of need. Back then, Citizens Advice dealt with issues solely related to the conflict, such as: evacuations, rationing, and tracing missing service personnel or Prisoners of War.
Peterborough got its first branch in 1939 too and its volunteers were soon dealing with 100 enquiries per week. A local newspaper report from the 1940s states, “the volunteers give themselves freely because they feel the job is worth doing and brings its own reward”.And it’s exactly the same for volunteers today, although demand has increased greatly. The charity now receives an astonishing 1500-2000 calls per month from around Peterborough.
New volunteers are always welcome and desperately needed. So, if you have an hour or two to spare each week, why not get in touch? A range of roles can be matched to your skills and availability. Life today is undoubtedly more complex and hardship, arguably, even greater than when the organisation was set up in 1939.
Citizens Advice Peterborough urgently needs an army of new volunteers to help it deal with increasing demand for its services. Can you help make a difference?
