A native of California. It is an endangered species – only 80,000 in the world. There are three in Barnack, this one in Bainton, and others in the United Kingdom which were grown from seed that arrived here in 1853 – so this tree was sown halfway early in Queen Victoria’s reign, but is only a baby.
Although they grow quickly in Britain, even the tallest is only one tenth the volume of the the biggest in the world – the General Sherman in California has a volume of 1,500 m3, is 84m (275ft) tall and is about 2,500 years old!
