ButtercroSs Outing Report 3rd June
Easton Walled Garden
Just under a dozen members enjoyed the afternoon at the gardens. Following a rainy drive and start to the visit, the sun shone on us for the rest of the afternoon. We all gathered in the shop where Lady Cholmeley gave us a brief history of the estate and recounted how she, her mother and her husband began in 2001 the arduous process of transforming the nettle and bramble ridden grounds into the beautiful gardens that we see today. To celebrate the 25 year anniversary of this undertaking, they have opened a new fountain garden with a memorial to the parachute regiment stationed there during the Second World War.
After the talk, we made our separate ways through the wonderfully landscaped gardens. It was my first visit and I marvelled at the vast manicured expanses of lawn and wondered how many man hours it must take to keep them in that condition. I was told about and then noticed for myself the army of lawn robots in action. The wonders of modern technology! It was a little too early to see the renowned sweet peas at their best but there was a profusion of colour in the many flower beds.
At the end of the visit we all gathered in the coffee room where we enjoyed a welcome cup of tea and piece of cake and agreed that it was a most pleasant afternoon.
The next Buttercross meeting on July 1st will feature a talk by Sandra Jones on Growing and cooking with herbs. Alex
The King of Conkers: 2025’s “Anorak of the Year”
Barnack resident St.John Burkett, has reached the pinnacle of prestigious eccentricity. Recently crowned Anorak of the Year 2025 by the Dull Men’s Club, St.John has spent over three decades coordinating the World Conker Championships. For him, this “dubious accolade” is a badge of honour far more exciting than an MBE, proving that he hasn’t lost his sense of play.
The Dull Men’s Club celebrates the “glories of the ordinary,” honouring those with niche, mundane hobbies. St.John joins an elite roster of past winners, including a man who photographs potholes and a collector of unusual rubbish bins. His journey to “dull fame” began as “Mr. September” in the club’s annual calendar, but his 2025 victory was cemented by his tireless devotion to the horse chestnut.
St.John’s passion faced a “near-disaster” recently when unseasonably warm weather caused conkers to ripen too early. Fearing a shortage for the mid-October championships, St.John took to the national press. The public responded with an outpouring of donations, including a mysterious box from the PR team at Windsor Castle – who knows if they might have been gathered by the royals themselves.
The World Conker Championships, which has raised over £420,000 for charities supporting the visually impaired, is no stranger to drama; it recently weathered a scandal involving “King Conker” and allegations of a steel nut. Through it all, St.John remains a steadfast advocate for the game he has loved since boyhood.
Upon receiving his framed certificate from club founder Grover Click at a modest London lunch, Burkett noted that the award would likely find its place in his downstairs toilet. While his wife greeted the news with a dryly raised eyebrow, St.John is perfectly content. If being a lifelong conker enthusiast makes him an “anorak,” he wears the title with immense pride.
