Daffodil (Narcissus) there are over 50 species.
Also known as Jonquil, Daffadowndilly.
Botanical characteristics:
The colour of the bloom is white yellow and orange in the northern hemisphere it heralds the onset of spring.

The Daffodil Symbolises:
In March it is synonymous of spring as it is the epitome of rebirth and new beginnings, domestic happiness, respect, regard and friendship.
Because of their association with spring and the Lent period falls in spring
They’re known as the Lent Lilly. It is also mythological.
• The daffodil is the national emblem of Wales. A Welsh legend claims that the first person to find the first daffodil bloom will be blessed with more gold and silver in the coming year.
• In China the daffodil symbolizes good fortune. In fact, it is so esteemed for its ability to bring forth positive things that it is the official symbol of the Chinese New Year.
• In France the daffodil is a sign of hope.
• In the United States the daffodil is the official symbol of the American Cancer Association, symbolizing hope for a cure. It is the flower of the month of March and the symbol of the 10th wedding anniversary.
In the United States the daffodil also represents the arrival of spring, rebirth, domestic happiness and vanity.
• In Medieval Europe the belief was that if you gazed at a daffodil and caused it to droop it was an omen of impending death.
• In Arabian countries they believe the daffodil to be a cure for baldness.
• In Islam the daffodil symbolises eyes.
• In Japan the daffodil represents respect, mirth and joyousness. The narcissus represents self-esteem

The private gardens of Burghley House are opened each year for a fortnight in the spring. Set against the lake, the swathes of daffodils look stunning.
